Caulipsolon rapaceum is the only plant of monotypic genus Caulipsolon from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae).

description

Caulipsolon rapaceum is a recumbent to prostrate geophyte with bulbous roots . The herbaceous internodes are structured and contain additional vascular bundles in their cortex . Their nodes have distinct, fine, horizontal furrows. The almost cylindrical leaves are arranged crosswise and free at their base. The central water-storing cells are hardly pronounced. The bladder cells of the internodes and deciduous leaves are mesomorphic and flattened.

The flowers form little-flowered cymes and are rarely single. They have a diameter of 20 to 30 millimeters. There are five sepals that have grown together to form a short tube. The white petals are free at their base. There are no thread-like staminodes , the nectaries are narrow, shell-shaped.

The five-faceted capsule fruits have bent-back flaps that are fused together in pairs. The capsule fruits contain ocher-colored seeds with a rough seed coat .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of Caulipsolon rapaceum extends in South Africa from Calvinia in southern Namaqualand to Clanwilliam .

The genus was first described in 1998 by Cornelia Klak . The genus Caulipsolon belongs to the subfamily Mesembryanthemoideae within the family of aizoaceae . The first description of Caulipsolon rapaceum as Mesembryanthemum rapaceum was made by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin . Cornelia Klak placed them in the genus Caulipsolon in 2002 .
