Cavaillé (organ building family)
Cavaillé or Cavaillé-Coll is the name of a family of organ builders from the south of France. The first organ builder with the name Cavaillé is Joseph Cavaillé (* 1700; † 1767), a student of Frère Isnard . His nephew, Jean-Pierre Cavaillé (* around 1740 in Gaillac (Tarn) ) also became an organ builder and worked in Spain from 1765; Due to Jean-Pierre's marriage to Françoise Coll in Barcelona in 1767, his son Dominique-Hyacinthe (born April 16, 1771 ) carried the double name Cavaille-Coll according to Spanish custom. The family tradition continued with his sons Vincent Cavaillé-Coll (born October 9, 1808, † 1886) and Aristide Cavaillé-Coll ; he is by far the most important bearer of the name and is considered to be one of the most powerful organ builders of all time. Aristide's son Gabriel Cavaillé-Coll was only moderately successful as an organ builder. With him the dynasty ends.
