Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya speaks at the Game Developers Conference 2011.

Cave Story ( jap. 洞窟物語 Dokutsu Monogatari ) is a freeware - action adventure in 2D graphic, which for the 2004 PC has been released and over a period of 5 years from Studio pixels ( 開発室pixels ), the one-man Studio developed by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya.

It was translated into English by Aeon Genesis with the author's approval under the title Cave Story . Porting to other platforms like Mac OS X , PSP , GP2X , Linux , Xbox , TI-83 / 84 and AmigaOS followed in the following years by hobby developers. A commercial version with revised graphics was announced for WiiWare in 2008 , was released in March 2010 in North America and in December 2010 in Europe. It was also released in November for DSiWare in North America.

Game mechanics

The character moves across the screen like a side-scroller and is able to jump and fight his opponents with weapons. During the course of the game, the player can collect and exchange various weapons and items . Similar to Metroid, the course of the game is based on extensive, freely accessible level sections . Newer sections are accessible through collected weapons or items, so that an ever-growing part of the world is accessible.

action

The android Quote wakes up in an underground cave with no memories. Shortly thereafter, he discovers a village that is inhabited by animal-like humanoids, the Mimigas. These are threatened and pursued by the doctor . Two of the doctor's subjects - the witch Misery and Balrog - are looking for a Mimiga named Sue ; accidentally capture the Mimiga Toroko . The main objective of the game is now to save Sue, to protect the Mimigas from the doctor and to escape from the cave.

Characters

Quote is the main silent character that the player controls.

Curly Brace is a female robot who wants to protect the Mimigas.

Sue Sakamoto ( 坂 本 数 ) is the daughter of Momorin Sakamoto, who didn't want to set foot on the island right from the start. She was turned into a Mimiga by Misery.

Fuyuhiko Date ( 伊達 冬 彦 ) - the "Doctor" - is the master of the so-called Demon Crown. His goal is to feed the Mimigas with red flowers and thus turn them into ruthless killing machines.

Balrog is Misery's "sandbag" and appears as a boss opponent several times during the game. Due to the curse of the Demon Crowns he is bound to fight for the doctor, but he also comes to the aid of the player in some situations.

Misery the witch reports to the doctor and is the daughter of Jenka. Since it was she who created the Demon Crown, it is doomed to obey whoever wears it.

Kazuma Sakamoto ( 坂 本 数 馬 ) is Sue's brother and a specialist in the Sky Dragons.

Jenka (from Jenkka , which is also played as background music in her house) is an old witch who has lived on the island for a long time. She lives in the sand zone and takes care of raising her puppies. She is also Misery's mother.

King takes on the role of the new leader of the Mimiga village after Arthur's death. He feels responsible for Toroko. King wants to drive Sue out of the village because she is an outsider and she appeared at the exact time of the doctor's attacks. He dies trying to save Toroko, but gives his mighty sword to Quote beforehand in order to avenge him.

Jack is number 2 in the village. He wears thick glasses and a ushanka with a wing symbol.

Toroko is a Mimiga that Sue accepts and befriends with her. She is Arthur's younger sister.

Momorin Sakamoto ( 坂 本 百 鈴 ) is a rocket researcher and the mother of Sue and Kazuma. She didn't want to take her children with her to the island, but she doesn't want to leave them alone either.

Arthur is the legendary hero of the Mimigas. He always fought evil, but was most likely killed by the doctor and his henchmen before the game started.

Reviews

The reviews of Cave Story were very positive. Particularly praised was the size, which is unusual for a freeware game and which could easily keep up with commercial top titles in the same genre.

"Then there's a game like Doukutsu Monogatari, or Cave Story, which is so massive that it rivals modern GBA Castlevania and Metroid games in terms of scope and play time."

“How does one even begin to do justice to Cave Story? Lengthy, clever, and beautiful, this incredible Metroid-esque side scroller is not only one of the single best indie games ever made, but also one of the most important. "
