biography

Early years

Zahedi was born in Washington, DC and is descended from Iranian immigrants. He studied philosophy at Yale University . After graduation, he went to Paris, France to look for funding for his films, but was unable to find a producer for his projects on Arthur Rimbaud , Stéphane Mallarmé and Eadweard Muybridge . He produced an experimental music video for a song by Talking Heads , which was rejected by their singer David Byrne .

los Angeles

He then returned to Los Angeles to attend UCLA film school. While studying, he finished his first feature film, A Little Stiff (1991) , with fellow student Greg Watkins . The film was an experimental story depicting his unrequited love for a UCLA art student. He used real-life participants to do this. A Little Stiff received critical acclaim at its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival , but it was not a commercial success.

His next film, I Don't Hate Las Vegas Anymore (1994), documents his attempt to get closer to his estranged father and half-brother with a trip to Las Vegas. The film generated criticism after Zahedi insisted that his father and brother take the drug ecstasy with him in the film . Despite being panned by most American critics, the film won the Rotterdam Film Festival's Critics' Prize and became a cult.

San Francisco

In 1998 Zahedi went to San Francisco and released his next film, In the Bathtub of the World (2001). The film was a year-long diary with the idea of recording a minute each day and editing the footage down to 90 minutes. The film received an award on the Independent Film Channel .

In 2001, Zahedi produced Tripping with Caveh , a 30-minute film about a mushroom-induced high with singer and songwriter Will Oldham (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy).

Recent work

His 2005 film I Am A Sex Addict took 15 years to complete due to financial difficulties. In it, Zahedi shows the struggle with his penchant for prostitutes and the devastation that he has on his marriage and love relationships. When the finished project was rejected by Sundance , Zahedi tried to distribute the film himself. It was only after winning the Gothham Award for "Best Film Not Playing in a Theater Near You" that IFC Films recorded the film.

Zahedi has appeared in action roles in various films, such as Alexander Payne 's Citien Ruth , Greg Watkins ' A Sign From God , Richard Linklater 's Waking Life and Registered Sex Offender . In September 2009 Zahedi had a role in the small movie Unlimited Dreamtime - A 2 Week Film .
