Caventou is a very small impact crater in the western part of the Mare Imbrium . The circular, cup-shaped crater is completely surrounded by the mare . Before it was renamed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1976, Caventou was referred to as La Hire D because it was assigned to Mons La Hire to the southeast .
