Cayambe (music style)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cayambe is the name of a regional popular music style in the Ecuadorian province of Pichincha . The style is named after either the Cayambe volcano or the city of the same name . Cayambe is also heard a lot in the neighboring province of Imbabura to the north , for example in Otavalo .

Cayambe is in four-quarter time; The accompaniment is often based on the automatic accompaniment of a keyboard , and the basic rhythm usually comes from the computer or keyboard, but is enriched with additional percussion instruments, especially at live concerts.

Harmony and melody show the influence of traditional Andean music on the Cayambe: Major chords are the minor - tonic and the relative major . It cannot be determined whether the basic key is major or minor . Many cayambelongs manage with the two chords just mentioned. The melody often features pentatonic scales, which in some songs (e.g.) are expanded in the chorus , while other songs are pentatonic without exceptions.
