José Cayetano Heredia

José Cayetano Heredia Sánchez (born November 7, 1797 in Catacaos , Piura , † June 10, 1861 in Miraflores , Lima ) was a Peruvian physician and professor .

Life

José Cayetano Heredia, son of Manuel Heredia and Manuela Heredia Sánchez , grew up in the suburb of Catacaos of Piura . In 1813 the family moved to Lima. Heredia studied medicine there at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos . In 1825 he wrote his dissertation and became a professor at the college in San Fernando. He was rector of the Colegio de la Independencia, where he taught from 1843 to 1856 and was a member of the Junta Directiva de Medicina.

From 1843 to 1848 he was chief physician at the Tribunal Protomédico de Lima . In 1855 he wrote the draft for the establishment and establishment of the first faculty of medicine in Lima, which was established in 1856 at the Colegio de la Independencia.

Posthumously

The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, founded in 1961, was named after him.
