Cayo Espanto is an island off the coast of Belize . It is one of the 450 islands of the Belize Barrier Reef . Administratively it belongs to the Belize District . The island is privately owned and owned by Jeff Gram.
Until 1997 the island was nameless and together with two neighboring, tiny islets formed the Pinkerton Islands . In 1997, real estate agent Jeff Gram from Atlanta, Georgia bought the island and renamed it Cayo Espanto , in German the "terrible island", because it was cursed according to local folklore. In December 1998, Gram opened a resort with five guest bungalows. There is a helipad, a spa, a fitness room and a PADI - diving center on the island. Various celebrities have been guests on Cayo Espanto in the past, including Leonardo DiCaprio , who together with Jeff Gram bought the nearby island of Blackadore Caye in order to design another resort there.
