Blackadore Caye is an island off the coast of Belize . It belongs to the Belize District . The island is privately owned.
Blackadore Caye is one of the 450 or so islands of the Belize Barrier Reef . It is west of Ambergris Caye . The 0.4 km² large island has a rather unusual shape: It is approx. 3.5 km long, but only 190 m wide at its widest point. The island is marked as Cayo Sumba on nautical charts of the 17th century and is still called that in Spanish today. The oldest evidence of settlement is some bottle bottoms that were found on the island and dated to around 1650.
In 2005 Blackadore Caye was acquired for 1.75 million US dollars by Jeff Gram, owners of Cayo Espanto , and Leonardo DiCaprio , who wanted to build a resort there together with the Four Seasons hotel chain . DiCaprio discovered the island in 2004 during a diving vacation on Cayo Espanto. In 2015, Gram and DiCaprio signed a contract with the US real estate company Delos, which provided for the opening of a resort with the most ecological focus possible in 2018. After some delays, an opening was planned for 2019. No opening had taken place in mid-2020. A hotel, 36 bungalows and 36 villas were under construction at that time.
