Cecil von Bonde

Cecil von Bonde (born July 19, 1895 in Cape Town , † March 21, 1983 ) was a South African marine biologist and oceanographer .

Cecil van Bonde studied zoology at the University of Cape Town and became a senior lecturer in zoology after receiving his doctorate in 1918 . He then studied oceanography at the University of Liverpool , where he was a lecturer in zoology in 1924/25. He then returned to the University of Cape Town and became head of the Faculty of Zoology after the death of JDF Gilchrist . In 1928 he became director of fisheries and state marine biologist of South Africa. In 1932 he visited North America and in 1937 Europe including Germany. In 1946 he was elected to the FAO Fisheries Advisory Committee and in 1949 to the International Whaling Commission. He was director of fisheries in South Africa until 1952 and played an important role in its development. 1952 to 1960 he was director of the Fisheries Development Corporation of South Africa. In retirement he moved to Knysna .

He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Society of South Africa .
