Lady with an Ermine
(Cecilia Gallerani)

Cecilia Gallerani (* 1473 in Siena ; † 1536 ) was one of the mistresses of Prince Ludovico Sforza , the regent and from 1494 ruler of Milan , mother of his son Cesare (* May 3, 1491; † 1512).

At the age of ten she was married to Stefano Visconti in 1483. The engagement ended in 1487 for reasons unknown. In May 1489 she moved to Monastero Nuovo, where she probably met Ludovico Sforza.

After Prince Sforza married Beatrice d'Este , she received Palazzo Carmagnola as her residence in 1492 . She later married Count Ludovico Carminati de 'Brambilla, known as Il Bergamino , and gave birth to four children. After the death of her husband and one of her sons (1514-1515) she retired to the Castle of San Giovanni in Croce near Cremona .

Cecilia was an educated woman, fluent in Latin, wrote poetry and discussed philosophy with the scholars of Milan. Her portrait, painted by Leonardo da Vinci , known as the Lady with an Ermine , is in the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow .
