Cees Goekoop
Cornelis Hiëronymus "Cees" Goekoop (born December 4, 1933 in Amsterdam ; † September 26, 2011 ibid) was a Dutch lawyer and politician of the People's Party for Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD).
Life
After attending school, Goekoop studied law at the University of Leiden and worked as a lawyer after completing his studies.
On August 16, 1980 he was elected mayor of Leiden as a candidate of the VVD and held this office until January 1, 1999 when he was dismissed by Queen Beatrix because he had reached the age limit of 65 . During his term of office, the project of the so-called Muurgedichten (wall poems), which can be seen on the walls of houses in the streets of the city center, began. The 101 texts by well-known and unknown poets from all over the world are the result of a project that began in 1992 with a poem by Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva .
Goekoop was also active as an author and wrote, among other things, two popular science books about the Greek poet Homer .
