cellu l'art (made up of "celluloid" and "art", French for art) is an annual short film festival in Jena in April .

history

In 1999, committed students from the University of Jena turned their idea for their own short film festival into a concrete project. A non-profit association was founded to organize the first student festival in the history of Jena. On January 15, 2000, the short film festival had its premiere in the municipal cinema "Schillerhof". The audience saw the performance of 14 competition entries, from which the jury selected three winners. In addition to the jurors, the 150 or so spectators could vote for their favorites with an audience award.

The strong increase in the number of competition films allowed the festival to expand to two film days within a year. The name "cellu l'art" was introduced. In the following years the number of viewers as well as the number of festival days and competition films increased continuously. In 2011 around 4,000 people attended the events of the short film festival.

In 2004, for the first time, an “open air cinema” was held alongside the competition as part of the festival program. The festival has been taking place on the premises of the University of Jena since 2006, which earned the organizers both praise and criticism from the audience. In 2007 and 2008 the festival made guest appearances both on the premises of the University of Jena and in local cinemas. After the Capitol Kino, which has since been demolished, was once again used as an event location in 2010, the festival made a guest appearance in the Jentower in 2011 and in the Jenaer Volksbad in 2012 . In April 2014 the festival celebrated its fifteenth anniversary.

Competition and prizes

Short films that do not exceed 25 minutes in length are admitted to the competition. The film genre does not matter whether it is recorded or not. However, the films must be from the year of the festival or from the previous year. The country of origin is also not decisive. The organizer will select the competition participants from the submitted entries in a screening. A three-person jury will select the winning film and the second and third place from these entries. During the competition, the audience also votes on the audience award.

The festival's pricing structure has been reformed several times. Since 2013, prizes have been awarded in the categories "Best Short Feature Film", "Best Experimental / Animated / Documentary Film" (ExAnDo), "Audience Award", "Prize of the Youth Jury". Since 2012, in the course of negative reports about the city on the Saale in the context of members of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), the Jena Film Prize for Tolerance , which is sponsored by the city of Jena, has also been awarded.

In 2010 this structure of awards was changed with regard to awards in various categories: Awards were given in the categories “Best Short Film” (endowed with 1,000 euros), “Best Director”, “Best Screenplay”, “Best Cinematography” (each endowed with 500 euros) and “Best Acting” (male and female endowed with 250 euros each) is awarded. In 2012 the Jena Film Prize for Tolerance was awarded for the first time in the wake of the negative reporting on the city on the Saale in the context of members of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) .

The last change to the award structure took place in 2013: the "Best Short Film", the "Audience Award" and the "Tolerance Award" are now accompanied by a prize for the best experimental film / animation film / documentary film (ExAnDo) and, for the first time, the "Youth Jury Prize", which in 2013 was made up of students from Jena high schools.
