In modern times the municipality belonged first to Livorno , then to Fauglia , and was independent from 1902. On January 1, 2014, the municipality of Crespina was merged with the neighboring municipality of Lorenzana to form the new municipality of Crespina Lorenzana. The town hall seat of the new municipality is in Crespina.
