Centaurea argentea is a plant from the genus of knapweed ( Centaurea ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

features

Centaurea argentea is a subshrub that reaches heights of 10 to 45 centimeters. The stem is erect or ascending and has only a few, short branches. The lower leaves are lyre-shaped and have elongated sections. The shell is egg-shaped and measures 8 to 10 × 5 to 7 millimeters. The terminal spine of the light brown appendage of the bracts is missing or is up to 1.5 millimeters long. It is usually shorter than the side fringe. The pappus is roughly the same length as the fruit. Individual populations of the species can be very variable.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Centaurea argentea occurs in the southern Aegean . In Crete, the species grows in crevices at altitudes of 0 to 900 (rarely up to 1800) meters.
