The Center International de Recherches sur l'Anarchisme (CIRA) is a library and research center on anarchism .

history

The CIRA was founded by the Italian anarchist and conscientious objector Pietro Ferrua in 1957 in Geneva and was in charge of it until he was expelled from Switzerland. From 1964 the center was located in Lausanne and was supervised by Marie-Christine Mikhaïlo (1916–2004) and her daughter Marianne Enckell . Between 1975 and 1989, the CIRA was again based in Geneva before moving back to Lausanne, where it is still located today. Lectures and exhibitions are also among the activities of the CIRA. The library was represented at the anarchist book fair 2010 in Biel / Bienne . The Bulletin du CIRA has been published in French since 1959, with a list of new additions and source texts.

Stocks

The CIRA has set itself the task of collecting and storing all materials that deal with the world of ideas of anarchism or come from the anarchist movement. By 2011, around 18,000 books and brochures, 4,000 magazine titles (the oldest from 1848), 200 of which are currently still in publication, as well as audio and video recordings, some archives from groups and people and an iconographic collection ( Posters and photos). The archive catalog is available online. The CIRA does not have the means to buy new books, but lives solely from donations.

Related institutions

In addition to the CIRA in Lausanne, there are also similar archives in Marseille and Japan. Similar projects are the Archives from Below , the Library of the Free (Berlin), the Library from Below (Vienna) and the Archive for Alternative Culture (Berlin).
