The library from below in Vienna (Austria) sees itself as an alternative and supplement to the traditional libraries and archives in Austria. The main topics are “ left ” and “ left radical ” social criticism, politics and alternative areas of life.

Under the name Volxbibliothek , the library from below (Bvu) was founded in Vienna in January 2000 as an attempt to make books and magazines with left-wing political and alternative content accessible to a wider audience. With around 5000 books and 140 meters of magazines (as of December 2010), those interested can find out more about these topics with little money.

The library from below is the largest self-administered and non-institutional library in Austria and was founded by donating two private libraries. It is a member of the “Austrian Book Association”. Modeled after the "BVU" was in Graz in 2002 Infoladen motion founded is busy setting up a comparable library. The “Bvu” sees itself as a supplement to the Austrian projects women's solidarity , “BibliothEKH” and STICHWORT - archive of the women's and lesbian movement . In Austria, the library offers the largest list on the subject of anarchism and works closely with the “Archive of Social Movements” in Vienna.

Similar projects are the Archives from Below , the Library of the Free (Berlin), the CIRA (Lausanne) and the Archive for Alternative Culture (Berlin).

Events 2010 and 2012

The library from below has events for discussions, book readings, and flea markets.

  • A “Subersives Libraries and Archives Festival” was held in April 2010 to mark the 10th anniversary of the company's existence.
  • A book presentation and party in May with the topics “How are capitalism and sex (...) connected?”, “How can individual freedom and collectivity be realized” and “How do we change our everyday life and the capitalist system?”.
  • 2012: Advertising trip with presentations, city walk with archive of the Viennese punk movement, anarchist library & archive, library from below, bibliothEKH and collective memory.
