Archives from below
Archives from below , often also free archives , are archives that initially originated the history of the workers' and women's movements since the 19th century and since the mid-1980s as a result of the New Social Movements and which document these movements.
History of the archives from below
The first movement archives were created in Hamburg , Freiburg im Breisgau , Duisburg , Münster , Berlin and Munich in the mid to late 1980s. A second wave of founding followed in the mid-1990s. The archives are largely the result of private initiatives, with individuals leaving their materials to the archives - mostly libraries in info shops and autonomous centers . Central themes were the anti-nuclear movement , the women's movement , the environmental movement and the peace movement . There are also many left-wing radical magazines with small numbers in the archives.
The free archives network their holdings in a digital data network called Dataspace.
Archives from below in German-speaking countries
In Germany there are currently just over 270 archives from below . Most of them are in Berlin .
“Since they are the easiest to archive, these archives all have a large inventory of magazines and an extensive range of brochures. The bulk of it is gray literature and there is also a lot of "illegal" literature to be found. Mostly they also have books, leaflets and posters. "
It is precisely because of the existence of “illegal” literature that some archives have repeatedly been hit by house searches .
