Cercomonas jutlandica is a heterotrophic, soil- dwelling flagellate belonging to the Cercomonadida group . The species was first described from arable land in Jutland .

features

The cells are 10 to 16 micrometers long and spherical to droplet-shaped, rarely oval-elongated. The pseudopodia usually start from the rear end, less often from the sides of the cell. The two flagella are around 1.5 times as long as the cell, sometimes shorter. The anterior flagellum may be almost entirely absent. They arise from the front end. The nucleus is in the center of the cell, slightly towards the front end; to the side and in front of him the contractile vacuole . The inside of the cell is rich in grains. There are many refractive grains behind the nucleus. Non-refractive grains are scattered in the cytoplasm, predominantly in front of the nucleus.

The movement of the cells usually takes place in a creeping manner, with the anterior flagella performing erratic, serpentine movements and the posterior one being dragged along. There are also floating forms with a baggy appearance, mostly after the cultures have been fed.

The cysts are spherical in shape, 5 to 8 micrometers in diameter.

Systematics

Cercomonas jutlandica was first described as Neocercomonas jutlandica in 2004 . However, since the species came to lie in the same clade in molecular genetic studies as the type species of the genus Cercomonas , Cercomonas longicauda , the species was transferred to this genus as Cercomonas jutlandica .
