Cereus insularis is a species of plant in the genus Cereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the distribution on the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.
description
Cereus insularis has a shrubby growth with, as a rule, spreading , deep green shoots 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter and is richly branched. There are six to eight straight ribs . The gray areoles on it are close together. The resulting 12 to 15 unequal, slender, needle-like thorns are brownish yellow to greyish brown and up to 1.2 (rarely up to 3) centimeters long.
The white flowers are 12 to 15 inches long. The ovoid to egg-shaped, shiny fruits are green to reddish in color.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cereus insularis is widespread in coastal areas of the islands of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago belonging to Brazil . The first description was published in 1884 by William Botting Hemsley .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
