Type Stratovolcano

The Cerro Lípez is a stratovolcano in the Cordillera de Lípez in southwestern Bolivia and is located in the province of Sur Lípez in the Department of Potosí . With its double peak of 5,929 meters, it is the second highest peak in the Cordillera de Lípez after the Uturuncu .

Cerro Lípez is incorrectly referred to as "Nuevo Mundo" on some maps. In fact, however, the Nuevo Mundo lies several hundred kilometers further northeast of Cerro Lípez and is about 500 meters lower. The incorrect designation is due to misleading entries by the German geologist and mountaineer Friedrich Ahlfeld , who mentioned in a letter from 1962 to the historian Evelio Echevita that two peaks of the Cordillera de Lípez could be considered "Nuevo Mundo".
