Certamen Homeri et Hesiodi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Certamen Homeri et Hesiodi ( Greek  Ἀγὼν Ὁμήρου καὶ Ἡσιόδου ) is an adaptation of a passage from Alkidamas (around 400 BC) "Mouseion" (around 400 BC ), based on an anonymous compiler from the reign of Hadrian (117-138 AD) "School"), in which a poetry competition between Homer and Hesiod is depicted. The text served as a sophistic exercise piece and is written in hexameters . This includes biographical records of Homer and Hesiod.

Text edition

The first critical edition of the text comes from Friedrich Nietzsche . This results in an interesting connection to Nietzsche's explicit rejection of romanticism and idealism , which emerged from his hitherto neglected innovative approaches in Homer research, and which forms the basis of all of his later philosophy .
