Cetema cereris is a fly from the family ofstraw flies (Chloropidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 3 to 3.5 mm. On the yellow head there is a large black oval triangle. The antenna bristles (Arista) are white. The pronotum and abdomen are black, the label yellow. The legs are yellow, the tibia a little darker.

Occurrence and way of life

Cetema cereris is widespread in the Palearctic . It occurs almost everywhere in Europe. The species is also represented in Great Britain . In the north, their occurrence extends to northern Finland ( Rovaniemi ). To the east, its range extends to the Russian Pacific coast and Japan. Cetema cereris flies from June to September. Meadows form the preferred habitat of the fly species. The fly larvae mine in the stalks of sweet grasses (Poaceae).

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 1820 by Carl Fredrik Fallén as Oscinis cereris . It is the only transpalaearctic species in the genus. Two subspecies are distinguished. Cetema cereris cereris occurs in the Western Palearctic (Europe), while Cetema cereris orientalis occurs in the southern Far East of Russia and Japan .
