Ceylalictus is a genus of bees withinthe Halictidae family . The genus is common in the Old World and the Indo-Australian region. A little more than 25 species are described. The bees live in areas with a hot climate. Only one species, the colorful steppe bee, has been reportedfrom Central Europe.

Ceylalictus bees are also called steppe bees in German , but the German name is mainly used for the genus Nomioides , a species of which also occurs in Germany.

features

Ceylalictus are very small bees, only 2.5 to 6.5 mm long. They are only sparsely hairy. The head and chest are usually metallic (green or blue), the abdomen is usually yellow or black with yellow spots. The females have a flattened abdomen.

Way of life

Ceylalictus bees mostly live solitary, they collect pollen from different plants (they are polylectic) and build nests in the bare ground. Sometimes the nests are in aggregations. They have one generation a year, they hatch in late summer and overwinter unmated as adults.

Systematics

Ceylalictus belongs to the genera Cellariella and Nomioides to the subfamily Nomioidinae.

Three subgenera of Ceylalictus are described: Atronomioides (Africa, Asia, 11 species), Ceylalictus s. st. (Africa, Asia, 13 species) and Meganomioides (Pakistan, North Africa, 2 species) .

Ceylalictus was partially regarded as a subgenus of Nomioides or united with it.

species

Most of the species are compiled by Pauly. It is noteworthy that there are seven species in Madagascar, five of which are endemic. Here are some common types:
