The variegated steppe bee ( Ceylalictus variegatus ) is a hymenoptera from the Halictidae family . It is widespread in Europe, North Africa, North India and Central Asia. In Austria it was historically reported from Vienna and Lower Austria and recently confirmed there. The species is an outspoken sand inhabitant.

The species is sometimes called Nomioides variegatus (synonym).

The variegated steppe bee is very small (3 to 4 mm), body hair is sparse, head and thorax are metallic colored, and yellow spots on the thorax. Clypeus yellow. Abdomen dark with yellow markings, flattened in the female.

Way of life

The colorful steppe bee is a pollen-collecting (polylectic), solitary, nest-building bee. The bees overwinter as adults.

The nests are dug in small or large aggregations on ungrown areas. They consist of a main corridor and several secondary corridors, at the end of which a brood cell is placed. This is covered with a waxy substance. The larval provisions consist of a mixture of pollen and nectar.
