The Château Maucaillou is one of the famous Bordeaux wineries . It is located in the Moulis , west of Saint-Julien and is classified as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. Maucaillou's location in the open countryside near the tiny Moulis train station is splendid.

Location, soil and vineyards

The cultivation area is 82 hectares. Half of the vineyards are in the municipalities of Moulis and Listrac-Médoc . Château Maucaillou has a large share in the Ice Age gravel-sand dome of Poujeaux, which represents the best terroir of the Moulis appellation . The field name “Maucaillou” refers to it directly - “caillou” is the French word for stone. Only red wine is produced . Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc predominate in the vineyards with a total of 62% . 32% is Merlot and 6% is Petit Verdot .

Winemaking follows the classical school of Bordeaux with long mash fermentation in stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation and subsequent 18 months lasting expansion in - largely new - oak barrels . The annual production is 480,000 bottles. The wine is smooth and harmonious with full fruit. It develops in the cellar for at least ten years. The class of Maucaillou wine is also reflected in the fact that the château is a member of the exclusive Union des Grands Crus . The well-known wine critic Robert Parker puts it on a par with the Grand Cru Classés . The best vintages in recent times are 1986, 1990 and 1996.

history

The winery is a relatively young creation. Its origins go back to 1871 when a trading company set up a warehouse for its Médoc wines near the train station . The historicist castle was then built in 1875 . Its style is reminiscent of the villas in the seaside resort of Arcachon . It was built by J. Petit-Laroche, the owner of the Entrepôts de Moulis . Petit-Laroche was even appointed purveyor to the imperial court . The Dourthe family has been running the Château Maucaillou in the sixth generation since the 1920s.

The estate maintains a wine museum , which is worth a visit. In addition to many exhibits and models, a film will also be shown, which combines the activities and ambitions of the owner family for wine with the love of music: the patron conducts the Paris Symphony Orchestra .
