Chōkei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emperor Chōkei ( Japanese 長慶 天皇 , Chōkei-tennō ; * 1343 ; † August 27, 1394 ) was the 98th Tennō of Japan (March 29, 1368-1383). He was the first son of Emperor Go-Murakami and his personal name was Yutanari ( 寛 成 ).

Chōkei was a counter-emperor in the 14th century and ruled the southern court in Yoshino . He had to assert himself against his opponents, the Ashikaga clan and the opposing court, but most of his court did not like his methods. So in 1383 he passed the throne to his brother Emperor Go-Kameyama . After the two farms were reconciled, he never returned to the capital, Kyoto .

With this, his line ultimately lost the throne, and he was not included in the list of Japanese emperors until the Meiji period . Emperor Meiji decided to recognize the emperors in Yoshino and removed his own ancestor from the list. However, the coronation of Chōkeis was historically doubted, which led to discussions, so that his name was not put on the list until 1926.
