Chōya Umeshu

Choya Umeshu KK ( Jap. チョーヤ梅酒株式会社 , Choya Umeshu Kabushiki Kaisha ; Engl. Choya Umeshu Co. Ltd. ) is a Japanese company with headquarters in Habikino in the Osaka Prefecture ( Japan ), which focuses on the production and sale of Umeshu specializes.

history

In 1914 the company's forerunner started growing grapes. The actual company was founded in 1924 by Sumitarō Kondō ( 金銅 住 太郎 ). At the beginning only wine was produced and sold. In 1949, Choya also began producing and selling brandy , and from 1951 onwards the production and sale of fruit wine was added. The Ume fruit liqueurs were added to the product range in 1959. In 1962, the Chōya Yōshu Jōzō KK ( 蝶 矢 洋酒 醸 造 株式会社 , literally: "Western spirits manufacturer Chōya") was founded, there was a capital increase to 8,500,000 yen . In 1968 the production and sale of medicinal herbal liqueurs began . The export business with the ume fruit liqueur began and there was a further capital increase to 17,000,000 yen. Further medicinal liqueurs were added to the product range in 1973. In 2000 there was another name change to Chōya Umeshu KK. In 2009, in addition to the drinks range, the cosmetic brand “Choya Puranasu” ( CHOYA プ ラ ナ ス ) was introduced exclusively as a mail order business. In 2010 the company logo was changed to CHOYA .

Choya's products are exported to 60 countries; there are branches in Germany , Shanghai ( People's Republic of China ) and the USA . The market share for plum liqueur is around 40 percent in Japan and over 75 percent in Taiwan .
