The Chaenactideae B.G.Baldwin are a tribe of the Asteroideae with three genera that are distributed from western North America to Mexico.

features

Chaenactideae are annual , often short-lived ( ephemeral ) or perennial plants , rarely alpine dwarf shrubs. The whole-margined or lobed , rarely incised leaves are alternate, opposite or almost opposite, in some species the basal leaves form a leaf rosette on the base or on the stem . The base of the cup is flat to convex and without chaff leaves, the individual flowers are hermaphroditic. The florets are usually white, pink or reddish, rarely yellow. The tubular flowers are usually yellow, sometimes reddish or whitish. The pappus consists of 5 to 10 more or less evenly thick, egg-shaped, narrow oval to round, rarely bilobed irregular scales or rarely multiple, jagged or bristly, linear to inverted scales, fused at the base. It falls and spreads as a whole.

Systematics, taxonomy and history of research

The tribe was developed by Baldwin et al. (2002) created to include the genera of the classical Helenieae, which with scaly pappus , without a thickened base or central ribs and striped achenes and, according to molecular studies, form their own line of the Heliantheae alliance. The results of the studies were supported by chloroplast DNA data (Panero and Funk, 2002).

Genera

  • Chaenactis DC. : The approximately 18 species are distributed from western North America to northwestern Mexico.
  • Dimeresia A.Gray : It contains only one species:
  • Orochaenactis Coville : it contains only one species:
