The Chaix man's shield ( Androsace chaixii ) is a species of the genus Mannsschild (Androsace) in the primrose family (Primulaceae).
features
This type of Mannsschild is striking because of the long-stemmed umbels. The lean main axis reaches a length of 10 to 20 cm, while the thinner minor axes are between 1 and 4 cm long. The small flowers are pink, the smooth calyx ends in five tips. The lanceolate leaves are somewhat serrated and united in rosettes. These arise from a simple root.
Occurrence
The range of this plant is very limited. It was discovered by the French botanist Dominique Chaix (1730–1799) in the mountainous regions of the southeastern department of Hautes-Alpes . Charles Grenier and Dominique Alexandre Godron (Gren. & Godron) named the plant after the discoverer.
Locations and distribution
The plant only seems to be native to the western Alps. Androsace chaixii is also presented in botanical gardens in other Alpine regions, but there the petals are white. The white variety is also cultivated in the plains and traded by gardeners as plants and seeds for rock gardens.
