Chalky Island is an island in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand and part of the Fiordland National Park .

geography

The 475 acre island is located at the entrance to Chalky Inlet on the southwest tip of the South Island, 10 km northwest of Puysegur Point , 15 km southeast of West Cape and 140 km west of Invercargill . In the east of the island runs the Eastern Passage and in the west the Western Passage of the Chalky Inlet . In the north, the island is separated from the main island of the two Passage Islands by the Bad Passage, which is less than 100 m wide . It is 2750 m away from the nearest shore of the mainland. The highest point measures 149  m .

history

The island was first mapped by James Cook in 1773 and was a seal hunter base in the late 18th and early 19th centuries , as is remembered by Sealers Bay in the north.

nature

By the Department of Conservation in 1990 all predators on the island were exterminated and later designated as a bird sanctuary . The sanctuary is one of the two most important of four sanctuaries for the flightless parrot Kakapo .

In addition, the southern subspecies of the long-legged flycatcher ( Petroica australis australis ) was relocated from Breaksea Island to the island in 2010 .

Yellow-headed , saddle-birds , dwarf kiwi and jumping parakeet also live on the island .
