Chalmers Memorial Church

The Chalmers Memorial Church , formerly Cockenzie United Free Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Cockenzie and Port Seton in the East Lothian council area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

After the split of the Church of Scotland in 1843, a large part of the local parish decided to convert to the newly founded Free Church of Scotland . Six years later, the congregation moved from what is now the Old Parish Church to a new building on School Lane . This was no longer considered sufficient in the 1890s, which is why donations were collected for a new building. When the construction of the Chalmers Memorial Church began in 1904, the Free Church had already merged with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland to form the United Free Church of Scotland . With the return of the split-off church to the Church of Scotland in 1929, the church building in Port Seton was renamed "Chalmers Memorial Church" in memory of Thomas Chalmers , the founder of the Free Church.

description

The church building is on Edinburgh Road to the west of Port Setton. It was based on a design by the architects Sydney Mitchell and George Wilson . The building is mainly designed in the style typical of the country, but also has neo-Gothic elements and motifs from the Arts and Crafts movement . The simple bell tower on the north-facing front is striking. A wide tracery with a simple roof is installed below the slate-covered gable roof . On the ridge sits an octagonal roof turret , which closes with a curved, slate-clad hood. Along the east side of the nave, four buttresses divide the façades vertically, and three on the west side. The gable roof is designed accordingly with wide dormer roofs with coupled windows. The north facade is designed with wide tracery.
