The Channar Mine is an iron ore mine in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia , 17 kilometers southeast of Paraburdoo .

The mine is operated by Rio Tinto Iron Ore , a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto Group , which holds a majority stake in it. The Channar Mine is one of 13 mines in the Pilbara that this mining company operates. In 2009 the Rio Tinto mines in the Pilbara produced 202 million tons of iron ore, more than 15 percent than the previous year. The Rio Tinto mines produced more than 13 percent of the world's 1.59 million tons of iron ore production in 2009.

The Hamersley Range , where the mine is located, contains 80 percent of all known iron ore deposits in Australia and is one of the world's largest deposits.

Rio Tinto has been producing iron ore in the Pilbara region since 1966. The Channar Mine began operations in open pit mining in January 1990. Rio Tinto produces 20 million tons of iron ore through joint production by the Paraburdoo Mine , Eastern Range Mine and Channar Mine. The iron ore from the Channar and Paraburdoo mines is transported to Paraburdoo before being loaded onto railways using conveyor belts. The ore from the mines is then transported to the coast by the Hamersley & Robe River Railway , where it is loaded onto ships. Ore from Channar, as well as Brockman Mine , Mount , Paraburdoo Mine, Eastern Range Mine, Marandoo Mine and Yandicoogina Minea is transported by rail to Dampier in the form of pellets and as a fine ore product . The iron ore products are mixed and sieved before loading. The maximum size of the pellets is 31.5 mm and that of the fine ore is 6.3 mm.

The mines employ locals from Paraburdoo. In 2009, the Paraburdoo, Channar and Eastern Range mines had 1,081 employees, compared to 1,324 in 2008.

The mine was temporarily closed in late 2008 when the Chinese business partner Sinosteel refused to sell at the lower iron prices during the financial crisis because the manufacturing costs for Brazilian iron ore were 11 percent lower. According to the findings of the Bank Credit Suisse , iron ore from Channar cost 11% more than the identical product from Brazil .

The mine, which is designed to produce 10 million tons per year in 1998, is expected to continue operating for 200 million tons of iron ore for the Chinese steel industry. The Channar Mine was the first company in which a Chinese company outside of China participated. and was China's largest overseas investment at the time. In 2010, Rio Tinto and Sinosteel announced plans that they would expand production by an additional 50 million tons of iron ore.

Rio Tinto holds 60 percent of the mine and the Chinese company Sinosteel Corporation 40 percent. Rio Tinto owns the mine through Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd , a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto, which owns six other iron ore mines in the Pilbara and interests in two other mines, including Channar.
