Characidium is the most species-rich genus from the family of the magnificent and ground tetra (Crenuchidae). It occurs from Panama to northern Argentina.

features

Characidium species are small, elongated fish that can reach a length of up to 8 cm. Characteristic features of the genus are the edentulous maxillary (an upper jawbone), a fully developed lateral line , an only rudimentary first dorsal fin ray and large pectoral fins with the fin formula 3-5 / 6-12.

There are almost 60 species, some of which have only been poorly diagnosed .
