Johannes Theodor Reinhardt (born December 3, 1816 in Copenhagen , † October 23, 1882 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish zoologist .

Live and act

Reinhardt's father Johannes Christopher Hagemann Reinhardt (1776-1845) was a Norwegian zoologist and professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen .

Johannes Theodor Reinhardt studied medicine from 1835 to 1836, but despite his father's encouragement, he finished his studies without success. On board the research ship Galathea he left Copenhagen in 1845 for a two-year trip around the world. He visited India , the Philippines , China , Hawaii and South America .

In 1847 he returned to Copenhagen and received the post of curator for terrestrial vertebrates at the Royal Natural History Museum in Copenhagen. From 1850 to 1852 and from 1854 to 1856 he traveled to Brazil twice and contributed significantly to the expansion of the museum collection. From 1856 to 1878 he was a lecturer in zoology at Denmark's Technical University . At the same time he was a lecturer from 1861 to 1865 and professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen from 1865 to 1882.

Reinhardt wrote numerous herpetological articles, especially on snakes. Among the taxa that were first described by him include the Borikenophis Portoricensis ( Alsophis portoricensis ), the Indian egg-eating snake ( Elachistodon westermanni ), the Banded Bodensalmler ( Characidium fasciatum ), the Red-backed squirrel monkey ( Saimiri oerstedii ) and the Salvinhokko ( Mitu salvini ).

Johannes Theodor Reinhardt was a supporter of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution .
