Charalambos Sfaellos

Charalambos Sfaellos ( Greek Χαράλαμπος Σφαέλλος , * 1914 in Alexandria ; † November 2004 in Athens ) was a Greek architect .

Life

Charalambos Sfaellos grew up in the Greek community of Alexandria. At the Averoff High School, he completed his education in 1931 with distinction. In the same year he began to study architecture at the National Technical University of Athens . After graduating in 1935, he initially stayed in Greece. With the support of a grant from the French government, he was able to study art history and aesthetics at the Institute for Art and Urban Planning of the Sorbonne in Paris in 1945 . He graduated in 1948 and received his doctorate the following year from the University of Paris.

After returning to Greece in 1950 he became head of the technical service of the newly established Greek National Tourist Board (EOT, Ελληνικού Οργανισμού Τουρισμού). Under his leadership the Xenia program, a milestone in modern post-war Greek architecture, began. In 1967 he was appointed to the University of Paris (until 1988). At the same time he took on an advisory role at the United Nations on the development of tourism in West Africa. In 1973 he returned to Greece for good. His project studies at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works particularly cover the tourism development of the East Aegean Islands.

In 2000 Charalambos Sfaellos bequeathed his entire architecture and photo archive to the Benaki Museum in Athens. From May 28, 2002 to June 23, 2002 the museum dedicated a retrospective to him.
