The Charger-class was a series of escort aircraft carriers originally built for the United States Navy in American shipyards during World War II . They were made from four C-P3 combination ships under construction for Moore-McCormack .

As part of the Allied armaments aid, three ships of this class were handed over to the Royal Navy and put into service there as the Avenger class.

Originally all four porters were to be handed over. The British had chosen the names HMS Avenger (BAVG 2) , HMS Biter (BAVG 3) , HMS Charger (BAVG 4) and HMS Dasher (BAVG 5) . However, the Charger was kept by the US Navy and put into service as the USS Charger (CVE-30) while retaining the name .

Data

The girders had a length of 141.7 meters and a maximum displacement of 15,120 tons. With a diesel engine with 8550 hp, a top speed of 16.6 knots could be achieved. For self-defense, the porters had several small anti-aircraft guns. 15 aircraft could be carried.

tasks

The escort carriers in British service were mainly used for anti-submarine defense, the Americans used their carrier in the Pacific for transport and air surveillance.
