The Commencement Bay class was a class of American escort aircraft carriers during World War II . They were based on the hull of the T3 tanker and were not completed until relatively late, the first entering service on May 9, 1944. As a result, most of the planned 33 girders were no longer used or their production was completely discontinued. 19 served in the United States Navy .

After the war, most of the carriers were converted to helicopter carriers or anti-submarine aircraft carriers or were used as training ships for crews and pilots and were involved in the Korean War. However, as they were too small for modern jet fighters, they were retired by 1960.

Technical specifications

The girders were 169.9 meters long, 32.10 m above the flight deck and 22.90 m wide in the waterline and had a draft of 9.80 m. The standard displacement was 11,373 ts (other sources: 12,000 ts), fully loaded 24,275 ts (other sources: 24,100 ts). The steam for the geared turbine drive was provided by four water-tube boilers, the 16,000 hp acted on two shafts. This enabled a top speed of 19 knots to be achieved. 3134 ts of fuel could be stashed (other sources: 1783 ts). They had a crew of 1066 people. The aircraft group comprised 34 aircraft. The Flakbewaffnung consisted of two 127-mm-L / 38-guns 36 40-mm anti-aircraft guns in three Vierlings- and twelve double carriages and 20 20 mm bottles automatic cannons .
