Charles Arnold Been , short Ch. A. Been (born March 14, 1869 in Copenhagen ; † January 4, 1914 ibid) was a Danish art historian and art collector and editor of some art historical writings.

life and work

The son of the businessman Jens Frederik Christian Been (1828-1891) and Georgine Frederikke, born. Modeweg (approx. 1839–1894) lived in Copenhagen all his life. He remained unmarried. He was buried in the kirkegåard garrison in Copenhagen.

After graduating from Borgerdydskolen in the Copenhagen district of Østerbro, he prepared for the final examination in history. With financial independence, but a - completely unfounded - mistrust of his knowledge, he dropped out after six years. Growing up in a wealthy home, he had been interested in art and the art industry while studying. In 1893 he took a job as a secretary at the newly opened Copenhagen Art Industry Museum for Art Design, Applied Arts and Design, which he resigned in 1905 for health reasons. He turned down an offer from the museum director Emil Hannover (1863–1923) to take on a position as librarian. For several years he worked as an artistic assistant for the daily newspaper " Berlingske Politiske og Avertissementtidende", but gave up this position in 1913 and has lived in his house as a private citizen ever since. He pursued art history studies and put a. a. offered an extensive collection of Danish artist portraits, which he bequeathed to the National History Museum in Frederiksborg .

His extensive knowledge has left little traces in Danish art literature - apart from a few magazine articles. In 1902/03 he published the biographical work “Danmarks Malerkunst”, to which he mainly contributed the extensive visual material. At his request, Emil Hannover took on the art-historical introduction . In 1911 he published the manuscript "Danske Fajancer" from the estate of the architect and collector Jacob Wilhelm Frohne (1832–1909).

Been campaigned among other things for the protection of the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen. A memorial bench ("Beens Baenk") with two stylized Art Nouveau heads and an oak seat, designed by Andreas Clemmensen and Anders Bundgaard, was set up in 1916 on the beach in Skodsborg.
