Dieter Hermann (athlete)
Dieter Hermann (born May 6, 1941 in Herpf , near Meiningen in Thuringia ) is a German athletics trainer and former athlete . He was best known through his many years of coaching for Nils Schumann and as a four-time GDR champion in the obstacle course .
As an athlete
His sporting career began in his early years as a striker with the eight-class Herpfer SV , of which he is an honorary member to this day. At the age of 16 Horst Fennel discovered his talent for running in Meiningen. Only a year later he ran for the ASK in Erfurt , where Erich Bock became his trainer.
In the years 1964 to 1967 he studied civil engineering in addition to his runner job, following the example of his father . In 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1971 Dieter Hermann became GDR champion in the 3,000 meter obstacle course. In 1967 he won the middle distance at the GDR cross-country championships. In the hall he was champion in the 1500 meter run from 1967 to 1970 . His best performance over the 1500 m on the cinder track was 3:42 minutes, in 1969 in the 3000 meter obstacle course he ran his best time of 8: 36.2 minutes. Over the rarely run 1500 m obstacle , Hermann still holds the German record that he set in Prague in 1966 . From 1967 to 1969 he competed in six international matches for the GDR. In 1971, at the age of 30, he ended his career after catching a cold while training at high altitude in Belmeken, Bulgaria .
As a trainer
Dieter Herrmann was a trainer at the DVfL from 1971 to 1990. As a trainer he worked scientifically, forcing swimming, cross-country skiing and cycling for his running protégés. With his assistants like Marion Peters , Stephan Gneupel , Dieter Fromm or Enrico Aßmus , great successes emerged, especially after the fall of the Wall. Hauke Fuhlbrügge came third in the 1991 World Championship over 1500 m, Martin Strege and Ralf Aßmus later reached the World Championship finals over 3000 m obstacle. His protégé Nils Schumann was even more successful , first becoming European champion, then Olympic champion in the 800-meter run in Sydney in 2000 . Most recently he was active as a trainer for SV Creaton Großengottern .
