Charles Campbell (politician)

Charles Campbell (1695 - October 8, 1741 ) was a British military and politician who was twice elected as a member of the House of Commons .

Charles Campbell came from the Scottish clan Campbell . He was the second son of John Campbell from Mamore and his wife Elizabeth Elphinstone . His brothers included John and William Campbell .

Campbell joined the British Army as an ensign in 1726 , where he served with the 3rd Foot Guards in 1728 . In 1733 he was promoted to captain. In 1741 he was promoted to major in the Robinson's Marines and in the same year to lieutenant colonel in the 61st Regiment of Foot . After the related James Campbell, 2nd Baronet in favor of the mandate of Stirlingshire on his mandate for Argyllshire , Charles Campbell was with the support of his cousin John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll in a by-election on April 27, 1736 as a MP for Argyllshire elected. As his cousin's advocate, he was a member of the House of Commons opposition to the government of Robert Walpole . In 1739 he voted against an agreement with Spain that was supposed to prevent war with Spain . He was re-elected in the general election in June 1741, but died a little later as a soldier in Jamaica .

He had remained unmarried.
