Charles Geddes, Baron Geddes of Epsom

Charles John Geddes, Baron Geddes of Epsom CBE (born March 1, 1897 in Southwark , London , † May 2, 1983 ) was a British union leader.

Born in Southwark, south east London, he started working for the Post in 1911 . During the First World War he was a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps and after his return to civilian life he became active in the Union of Post Office Workers . In 1941 he became deputy general secretary of the union and from 1944 to 1957 general secretary. In 1955 he became president of the trade union confederation Trades Union Congress .

Geddes was on the board of directors of Polyglass Ltd.

On August 4, 1958, he became the third Life Peer after the Life Peerages Act 1958 , entitled Baron Geddes of Epsom , of Epsom in the County of Surrey. He also became Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
