Charles Hartshorne (born June 5, 1897 in Kittanning , Pennsylvania , † October 9, 2000 in Austin , Texas ) was an American philosopher .

philosophy

The philosophy of Charles S. Peirce had a great influence on Hartshorne , which he made available to a wider public as co-editor of the "Collected Papers" 20 years after Peirce's death. He was an important developer and founder of process theology , whose merit lay primarily in interpreting and continuing the theological aspects and implications of Alfred North Whitehead's philosophy . Hartshorne agreed with panentheism and rejected deism , pandeism and pantheism .

According to ancient metaphysics, God is the immutable absolute. Hartshorne revealed this traditional conception of God in his 1941 work Man's Vision of God . He no longer understood God as an immutable being, but as love that reciprocates creatively. Despite his perfect nature, God is in progressive interaction with the world.

Especially in his work “Beyond Humanism” Hartshorne proves to be an important exponent of the panpsychistic worldview.

In 1975 Hartshorne was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . His younger brother was the well-known American geographer Richard Hartshorne .
