Charles Jehlinger
Charles Jehlinger (born March 7, 1866 in Illinois , USA , † July 29, 1952 in New York City , New York , USA ) was an influential American acting teacher.
Life
Jehlinger taught at the New York American Academy of Dramatic Arts for almost 40 years . After the death of Franklin H. Sargent in 1923 he became head of the facility. His students include Cecil B. DeMille , Edward G. Robinson , Spencer Tracy , Hume Cronyn , Kirk Douglas , Anne Bancroft, and Robert Redford . Fundamental to Jehlinger's teaching was the view that the performer should faithfully follow the text when interpreting characters and situations.

The prestigious Charles Jehlinger Award for Acting is regularly presented in honor of Jehlinger at the American Academy for Dramatic Art . In Pasadena , California, a theater was named after him.
