Charles Leonard Bouton
Charles Leonard Bouton (born April 25, 1869 in St. Louis , Missouri , † February 20, 1922 ) was a mathematics professor at Harvard University .
His parents, engineer William Bouton and Mary Rothery Conklin, settled in St. Louis after the Civil War.
Bouton received his Masters of Science from Washington University in 1891. After two years in Leipzig, he completed his doctorate under Sophus Lie in 1898 and returned to Harvard. In 1901/02 he discovered that the Nim game can be played with a mathematically easy to calculate strategy. This investigation is now considered the oldest result of combinatorial game theory .
In 1914, Bouton was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 1907 he married Mary Spencer of Baltimore, with whom he had three daughters, Elizabeth, Margaret and Charlotte.
