Charles Maynard (politician)

Charles Maynard (* 1970 in Nassau , Bahamas , † August 14, 2012 in North Abaco , Bahamas) was a politician of the Free National Movement (FNM) in the Bahamas.

Life

After attending Queen's College Maynard studied at the College of The Bahamas, which he graduated in 1988. He then worked for an agricultural development company where he participated in extensive research into the profitability of agriculture and livestock in the Bahamas. He later worked for a hotel group and was responsible for the development of the Corner Hotel in Nassau in 2000. In the following years he was involved in promoting the culture, products and service companies of the Bahamas as well as in various Junkanoo groups, which hold musical street parades in the Bahamas every year on Boxing Day , New Year's Day and in the summer months.

In the parliamentary elections in 2007 Maynard was elected as a candidate for the FNM for the first time as a member of the House of Assembly and represented the constituency of Golden Isles in this until his death .

Shortly after the election, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Education with responsibility for culture by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham , before becoming Minister for Youth, Sport and Culture some time later. Maynard held these functions until the FNM was defeated in the elections on May 7, 2012. After the election, he succeeded Ingraham as chairman of the FNM and leader of the opposition in parliament.

On August 14, 2012, he and the Secretary General of the FNM, Michael Foulkes , took part in an election campaign for a member of his party who wanted to run in a by-election for the seat in the House of Assembly that had become vacant through the resignation of Ingrahams. During this event, the 42-year-old father of three died of a heart attack.
