Charles Pannell, Baron Pannell

Thomas Charles Pannell, Baron Pannell PC ( September 10, 1902 , † March 23, 1980 ) was a British Labor Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons for almost 25 years and was temporarily a minister and in 1974 as a life peer due to the life Peerages Act 1958 became a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Pannell did his military service during World War II and was last promoted to second lieutenant on June 16, 1945 . After the war he was involved in local politics and was initially chairman of the council of the Municipal Bourough of Erith .

It was after the death of Thomas William Stamford on 30 May 1949 as a candidate of the Labor Party in a by-election ( by-election ) in the constituency Leeds West first elected on July 21, 1949 MPs in the House of Commons. He was able to prevail with 21,935 votes (55.2%) clearly against the candidate of the Conservative Party , B. Mather, who got 17,826 votes (44.8%). In the following general election , Pannell was re-elected with absolute majorities and represented the constituency for almost 25 years until he renounced a new candidacy in the general election on February 28, 1974 . During his membership in the House of Commons, he was for several years so-called "pair" of the Conservative MP Margaret Thatcher ; this is a member of parliament who is assigned to another member of the opposing parliamentary group and who does not take part in votes when the other pair is absent.

After the election of the Labor Party in the general election on October 15, 1964 Pannell was the same person as Privy Councilor was supported by Prime Minister Harold Wilson as Prime on 19 October 1964 public buildings and works ( Minister of Public Buildings and Works ), assigning held this ministerial post until his replacement by Reg Prentice on April 6, 1966.

After leaving the House of Commons, Pannell was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated June 21, 1974 as a Life Peer with the title Baron Pannell , of the City of Leeds, and was a member of the House of Lords until his death.
