Charles Payton

Charles Payton (born January 6, 1960 in Camden , New Jersey ) is an American - Austrian basketball coach and former player. He became Austrian national champion as a player and coach. His son Kevin Payton also became a professional basketball player.

Payton first played American football in his US home state New Jersey before he could no longer play this sport due to an injury and switched to basketball at Camden High School at the age of 16. From 1978 to 1982, the 1.96 meter tall winger played basketball at Appalachian State University , North Carolina . The best statistical values ​​during his university time achieved Payton in the game year 1980/81, when he posted an average of 17.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

After the end of his college career, he switched to the professional camp and played for FC Porto in Portugal , then for the English clubs Leicester Planters and Bracknell Pirates. In 1986 he came to Austria and played for BK Klosterneuburg , SPI Vienna and Vienna Basket Flyers as well as Oberwart in the Bundesliga . With Klosterneuburg and Vienna he was national champion five times.

Trainer

He worked as a coach at the second division WAT Vienna, between 1999 and 2001 he was the head coach at Arkadia Traiskirchen and led the team in 2000 to win the Austrian championship title and the cup competition.

From 2002 to 2004 Payton worked as head coach of the second division Millenium Club Vienna . After an interim position as an assistant trainer at Kraftwerk Wels , he returned to Vienna in 2005: as head coach in 2008/09, as assistant trainer in 2009/10 and temporarily interim trainer in 2011/12. In the 2012/13 season he worked as an assistant coach for the Vienna DC Timberwolves.
