Charles Robert Smith

Sir Charles Robert Smith (born November 13, 1887 , † November 4, 1959 ) was a British colonial administrator and governor of British North Borneo .

He took over from Douglas James Jardine in 1937 . When the Japanese occupied Borneo during the Second World War , he was taken prisoner of war on the morning of January 19, 1942 and was deported to the Batu Lintang Camp in Kuching . After his return from captivity in August 1945 and the end of Japanese sovereignty, he was officially back in the governor's office from September 10, 1945. His tenure ended in November 1946. In recognition of his services, he was knighted on January 1, 1947 as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
