Charles Simon (born September 25, 1882 in Paris , † June 15, 1915 near Arras ) was a French athlete and football official.

Life

As a teenager, Charles Simon practiced various sports, which was not atypical for the time. Active athletes, especially the older ones, often had to take on organizational tasks themselves, so that initially there was no separation between “only athletes” and “only functionaries”. In 1905, Simon joined the leadership of the Catholic Fédération gymnastique et sportive des patronages de France , one of several French sports associations at the time , in which footballers could organize themselves as Secrétaire général sportif (General Secretary for sporting matters) . He was also co-editor of the official association body "Les Jeunes". In 1909 he received 3,000 francs a year for his services; He is thus one of the first paid sports officials. He was also a member of the management team at another French sports association, the Union des sociétés françaises de sports athlétiques . Together with Henri Delaunay , he founded the Comité français interfédéral in March 1907 , which was one of the predecessor organizations of the French football association Fédération Française de Football , and became its founding president.

Simon took part in the First World War as an infantry soldier and died in a battle, the "combat du labyrinth", near the city of Arras. In his honor, the Comité français interfédéral named the French football cup, which was played for the first time in the 1917/18 season, after him. A dedication to Simon is engraved on the trophy.
